Frequently Asked Questions

When should year-end close start?
Begin soft close tasks in December (or the final month of your fiscal year): reconcile cash weekly, clear old AR/AP, and capture prepaid/accrual items early so January is review—not cleanup.
What does “lock the period” mean?
After statements are reviewed, restrict posting to the closed year so later adjustments go through controlled entries. Share the locked trial balance with your CPA or auditor.
Do cash-basis businesses need accruals?
Cash-basis books still need bank reconciliations, loan balances, fixed asset tracking, and cleanup of clearing accounts. Accrual-basis entities add AR/AP and deferred items.
What should go to the tax preparer?
Final trial balance, financials, bank recs, loan statements, fixed asset activity, payroll summaries, 1099 drafts, and prior-year return. Use a business tax return checklist for the full organizer.
