Frequently Asked Questions

Who must pay quarterly estimated taxes?
Individuals who expect to owe tax above the IRS threshold after withholding and credits generally must pay estimates. Self-employed people, investors, and pass-through owners commonly pay Form 1040-ES. Corporations may have separate estimated tax rules.
What is the safe harbor?
Many taxpayers can avoid underpayment penalties by paying at least 100% (or 110% for higher incomes) of last year’s tax through withholding and timely estimates. Confirm the percentage that applies to you.
When are quarterly payments due?
Federal individual estimates are generally due mid-April, mid-June, mid-September, and mid-January. Weekends and holidays shift dates. States set their own calendars.
How should I document payments?
Keep EFTPS confirmations, IRS Direct Pay receipts, or canceled voucher records with the payment date and amount. Provide the full year’s payment list to your tax preparer.
