Product Liability Insurance Checklist

Manufacturer, Distributor, and Broker Resource

Prepare a products-liability submission with a checklist for manufacturers, distributors, importers, and brokers. Collect the product schedule and sales by SKU or category, quality-control and recall procedures, contracts with suppliers and customers, currently valued loss runs, and any prior product-recall or liability policies. Underwriters rate the product, the end user, and your controls—not only revenue. Not insurance advice; confirm current applications, batch/recall options, and exclusions with a licensed specialty broker.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is product liability the same as general liability?
Products-completed operations is often part of a CGL, but some risks need a standalone or excess products form. Component makers, importers, and certain consumer products may be surplus-lines only. Your broker should confirm the form.
What product details do underwriters want?
What it is, who uses it, where it is made, warnings and instructions, testing, recalls, and sales by country. Brochures and websites are often requested because they show claimed uses.
Do we need a recall policy too?
Product liability generally addresses third-party injury or damage claims, not the cost of pulling product from shelves. Recall or contaminated-products coverage is a different form if you need it.
Is this insurance advice?
No. Product exclusions (aviation, medical, firearms, etc.) are common. Confirm current applications and forms with a licensed broker before you assume a CGL is enough.
