Commercial Auto Insurance Checklist

Fleet Manager and Commercial Broker Resource

Submit a commercial auto account with a document checklist for fleet managers, owners, and brokers. Collect the vehicle schedule (VINs, values, use), driver list with license numbers, motor-vehicle records as the market requires, currently valued auto loss runs, and radius or commodity details for trucking risks. Driver and vehicle accuracy drives rating and claims handling. Not insurance advice; confirm current applications, filings (MCS-90, state), and coverage forms with a licensed commercial-auto broker.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is on a commercial auto schedule?
Each unit’s year, make, model, VIN, stated value or cost new, garaging ZIP, and use (service, retail, commercial). Trailers and hired units may need their own lines. Wrong VINs delay claims.
Do we need MVRs for every driver?
Many markets require recent MVRs and a signed disclosure to pull them. Some states limit what you may consider. Follow the carrier’s driver guidelines and applicable employment/FCRA rules when a CRA is used.
Is hired and non-owned auto the same as a fleet policy?
No. HNOA covers certain liability from hired or employee-owned vehicles used in the business. It does not replace scheduled physical damage on company units. Your broker should explain the form you actually bought.
Is this insurance advice?
No. Commercial auto forms, symbols, and filings are technical. Confirm current requirements with a licensed broker, especially for trucking or interstate use.
